Flowers for your School Prom!
To me Graduation celebrations are and I think will always be such an American concept, but we Brits seem to be embracing the idea with a vengeance, and why not?
Wikipedia’s define the occasion as “Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become graduates. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as graduands. The date of graduation is often called graduation day. The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation.
In the United States and Canada, it is also used to refer to the advancement from a primary or secondary school level”.
Another definition from http://www.netglimse.com/holidays/graduation_day/index.shtml
…… “Graduation Day is the day you can say I’ve done it! a milestone in your life. Graduation is a transition between childhood and adulthood, a final farewell bash after the years of school”.
So really it is a very worthy celebration, many years of hard work paying off, reaching adulthood and all being celebrated by a final farewell bash, the all important “School Prom”!!
In the UK it seems to be an occasion that is now celebrated at the end of senior school as well as at the end of University. Even pre-school nurseries are joining in the fun!!
